General:
The body has the ability to activate the blood clotting process in cases of trauma or other damage. In some pathological conditions, the coagulation mechanism can be activated and form small clots that enter the bloodstream that can cause strokes, myocardial infarction (blockage in the coronary vessels), pulmonary embolism (blockage of the pulmonary arteries), venous lower extremity thrombosis (occlusion of the veins).
It is treated by administering drugs that reduce the clotting ability of the blood in order to reduce the possibility of clot formation.
The test used to test the anticoagulant effect of coumarin anticoagulants is the prothrombin time or PT. The prothrombin time measurement represents the activation time of the clotting mechanism. The PT value is used to calculate the INR (International Normalized Ratio), a practical and standardized way of estimating anticoagulant activity common to all hematology laboratories. Measuring the INR is simple and requires taking 3cc of venous blood, in a tube with a special anticoagulant. The higher the INR, the longer the clotting time. In most cases the target INR is between 2.0-3.0 and should be tightly regulated to reduce the risk of thrombosis (if the INR is lower) and the risk of bleeding (if the INR is higher).
